Gracie Barra

Close Protection Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Ground Fighting System

Background

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that specializes in ground fighting and defense. It was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century and is more famously recognised today for its use in mixed martial arts (MMA) and the UFC.

This defensive system promotes the principles that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger subject using leverage and body manipulation techniques; most notably, by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to subdue and control noncompliant and aggressive subjects.

The BJJ strategy is to avoid physical attacks such as punches and kicks from an opponent by taking the aggressor to the ground, where the striking ability is reduced and Jiu-Jitsu techniques can be applied to control the situation.

As a specialist security operator the threat of an unarmed grappling altercation at some time in your career is very real and due to the very nature of the job it is more than likely that the aggressor will be a well trained individual with pre-meditated intentions. For a CPO to go to ground in an aggressive physical attack is deemed as a situation that must always be avoided, however statistics show that over 95% of all unarmed fights go to the ground. Despite this fact, most current self-defense courses cover no aspects of the ground fighting game, the most important yet most overlooked aspect of any fight.

PRL has recognised the lack of this fundamental defensive skill in operational security specialists which is essential especially for unarmed operators deployed domestically in the United Kingdom. From this, PRL in conjunction with Gracie Barra instructors, have devised a unique four day ground fighting course based around the BJJ system. This provides the opportunity for students to be trained exclusively by the most decorated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu team in history, under a Black belt Professor from the Gracie Barra family. No previous experience is required by students and PRL guarantee that successful completion of the course will result in attendees being equipped with a high level of understanding and experience in the realistic, unique and essential skills of the CPO BJJ ground defense system. Also included in the course are lessons incorporating use of force legislation and first aid to cover post incident treatment of subdued subjects, thus ensuring operators are protected against potential criminal prosecution.

Course content:
  • Legislation theory (use of force/self defence/Offences Against the Person Act)
  • First Aid (post Incident protocols)
  • Human anatomy
  • BJJ Ground fighting techniques (open guard/closed guard/control & passing guard)/sweeps & take downs/submissions)
The 4 day course will be run over a daily 7 hour period between 0900 hrs – 16.00 hrs covering theory, practical instruction, technique drills and specific real time sparring. To guarantee the highest level of instruction courses are restricted to 20 students.

Course dates:

Mon 25th - Thurday 28th July - N. London

On successful completion of the course, students will be presented with a Gracie Barra/PRL certificate and, if appropriate recommended for advanced training in BJJ and weapons defence system training. (To attend the advanced courses students will have to have attended the initial CPO BJJ Ground fighting course)

Course cost: £350
